If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.

I am so excited to share with you the Win Mortimer Trust for Artists. This website project features many examples of Win’s work, a biography, and information on applying for funds from the trust set up in his memory.

When Win’s son, Jim, brought this project to me, I was ecstatic! The drawings and images of Win’s life are icons in cartoon history. Batman, Superman, Spiderman- needless to say how honored I was to help memorialize a man like Win Mortimer. Jim’s mother, Eileen, who passed away in the spring of 2018, used to lament to lack of funding for art students. This trust is set up to aid those students who intend to make a career in the arts.

To design a site with a heavy amount of black and white images, I chose a deep cranberry for an accent color. Too much bright color would detract from the black and white images. The logo is a combination of Win’s actual signature and a font called ‘Alike’. Preserving his actual signature was very important to Win’s family as it appeared on almost every one of his published cartoons.

Win Mortimer was also known for comics outside of DC and Marvel including David Crane, Larry Brannon, and Obadiah. We included other examples of his art such as Edwardian style drawings, childhood artwork, and many examples from his time at the New York Student’s Art League.

The final product here is a special way of supporting artists and art education while honoring the memory of an amazing artist.
